Adapting Existing Facilities for the Next Generation of Naval Vessels
Costain performed key upgrades to refurbish the marine jetties at HMNB Portsmouth built in the early 20th century. Thanks to the improvements made, the facilities were modernised to accommodate the next generation of navy vessels including Aircraft Carriers and Destroyers.

The Project
As part of a Ministry of Defence Plan to modernise the facilities at the Portsmouth naval base, we were contracted to perform works which were essential for enabling vessels to berth for replenishment and stores.
Background
The existing jetties dated from between the world wars and had to be demolished and removed prior to construction of the new works. The site was in close proximity to listed structures and historical landmarks including HMS Victory.
Consequently, vibration and movement monitoring formed a crucial task in the construction process in order to preserve the surrounding environment.
Our Role
During the project we carried out the following activities to upgrade the facilities:
- Demolition of the existing jetties and removal of timber piles.
- Construction of two 180m long deep-water jetties, undertaken with tight vibration limits and a concrete deck with service trenches.
- Design was optimised to include a number of pre-cast concrete componentsto reduce the extent of work carried out in the tidal zone
- Design and installation of mechanical and electrical services for ship replenishment and maintenance
- Preservation of the old masonry quay wall which is a Scheduled Ancient Monument as well as other listed buildings.
Our Impact
The new jetties capable of handling vessels up to 50,000 tonnes were completed within budget, ahead of schedule and with zero defects. The works were phased in order for activities to be carried out whilst the facility was fully operational.
